- Is this survey anonymous?
Yes, this survey is completely anonymous. All survey responses will be collated by Taverner Research and a report will be prepared on key issues raised by everyone who participates. No individual’s personal details are captured or reported and there will not be any follow up with individuals or individual operators by Office of Transport Safety Investigation (OTSI), the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) or TfNSW Maritime in relation to specific responses to this survey.
- How long will the survey take to complete?
The survey will take around 10 -15 minutes to complete.
- What is the purpose of this survey?
The purpose of the survey is to understand the safety induction experiences of different domestic commercial vessel crew across NSW and to identify if there are any opportunities to improve the quality of those inductions to make crew and passengers safer.
- Who will have access to the survey results?
Only OTSI and its research partner Taverner Research Group will have access to the specific survey results, but a report outlining the key findings will be shared more widely in the industry.
- What will happen with the survey results?
The results will be analysed to identify any trends or common topics. OTSI will use this information to engage with the domestic commercial vessel sector – including operators, industry bodies, the regulator and government agencies – and discuss if there are opportunities to improve induction practices.
- How will the survey results be shared?
OTSI will share key findings with organisations involved in the domestic commercial vessel sector and a summary of the findings will be published on the OTSI website and in the On Board newsletter. Subscribe to the newsletter

The survey results are likely to be released in August 2023.
