One in five bus fires were caused by leaks of fluid such as diesel fuel, engine oil and glycol-based coolants in NSW in 2023.
The number of bus fires in NSW has increased in recent years, but preventative measures during maintenance processes and day-to-day operations can reduce the risk by following these tips:
Ensure the hoses and lines carrying glycol-based coolants and diesel fuel hoses are correctly and securely clamped.
Secure and correctly route hoses to protect them from vibration.
Clean up any coolant leaks and investigate further.
Follow manufacturers’ instructions for mixing coolant concentrates.
Check for oil leaks that can come into contact with hot engine surfaces. As part of the pre-departure check, ask your drivers to visually check the road surface beneath parked buses.
Bus fires are always a risk, but proper maintenance and vigilance can make a real impact in preventing loss of life and vehicle damage. Find out more about the causes of bus fires and thermal events in the 2023 Bus Fire Safety Report.
